Quick Tip: Squarespace v.5 Developer Template

I recently stumbled upon one of the best articles on the HTML structure of Squarespace v.5 wireframe developer template. Even if you are using one of the other squarespace themes / templates, this article will help you better understand how tweaking the various elements via css affects your layout.

Oldie but Goodie

While researching the History of Squarespace, I Found this old school tutorial by Tyler Thompson featured in the online Squarespace Manual a few years back. I wasn’t able to locate it on the current SS website, but after shooting off a quick request to SS, they were kind enough to unearth it. I’m featuring it here because it is still very relevant.

Mr. Thompson discusses a few of the concepts that are not intuitive to the otherwise exceptional user interface that squarespace is known for. (eg. negative margins and padding, CSS that is only accessible through the advanced tab in the Style module) It took me over a year to realize there were editable elements not included in the Fonts, Color, & Style editor! Keep content from spilling outside your wrappers and content area.

#canvasWrapper, #content, #sidebar1, #sidebar2 { overflow: hidden; }

NB: At least one (Flont), if not all of the Squarespace templates, include the above code. You can edit the rule set  to include any of  the offending selectors causing problems with content spilling outside the intended boundaries. If you decide to use auto instead of hidden, you will get scroll bars.
