Squarespace Tutorial | Google Analytics Dashboard Plugin by Analytics 7

Google Analytics Plugin

I’ve just found a really cool Google Analytics Plugin for Squarespace users to view web analytics directly from a dashboard within your website. It’s super simple to install and should work for any Squarespace subscription plan. Up to 50,000 pageviews per month is free. Also note, you must have the Google Analytics Code (or if using v6, see this Squarespace 6 Google Analytics Help Doc) already embedded in your website. You will want the asynchronous version and although Squarespace recommends placing the code in the footer, you will get better accuracy pasting in the head. (This is different from the stats program included within Squarespace.)

Here’s a video that demonstrates the basic concept. Kind of cool just to listen to as the narrator has a Count Dracula-like accent.

Direction for Squarespace users

First, you will need to follow the setup directions and  past the following script into your footer

You will then notice a chart icon in the top-right corner of your website. Click on it and then follow the steps to connect to your Google Analytics account.

Connect to your Google Account

Sometimes you may get an error when trying to make the connection like I did! See this support forum question for details- http://www.analytics7.com/support/discussion/5/error-authentication-with-google-analytics-domain-is-not-registered . You will need to goto Google Manage my Domain page at https://accounts.google.com/ManageDomains and add your domain. In my case, I needed to add the www subdomain version of my site. I also found that closing my browser and then navigating back to my website fixed some issues.

Dashboard Customisation

You can also customize where the Analytics7 icon appears or whether to show it all. Unfortunately, I haven’t got the custom code to work yet. I believe it’s not formatted correctly for xhtml and probably just needs a bit of tweaking. It doesn’t bother me so I’m leaving it as is for now.

If you have set everything up correctly, you should be able to view your Google Analtyics Statistics right from your Squarespace website! I just set this up today and so far there are no issues. I’ll monitor the plugin for the next few days and report back any problems.
