How to Sync Squarespace 6 Gallery or Page with a Facebook Fan Page Tutorial

facebook-squarespace

[UPDATE: 7/30 There seems to be an issue with connecting to a Facebook PAGE right now (check the comments). Also, due to my daughter being mortified that I was talking about our knitting site here, she refuses to write or post anything so I've started a couple of other ss6 sites. As soon as they are some what presentable, I'll post the links.]

The Squarespace 6 Facebook Page Module has been the smoothest part of building my Squarespace six beta test site to date. It took less than five minutes and would of been less if I wasn’t taking screenshots to write this tutorial! You can find the Facebook Page sync tab in the Settings Module.

Squarespace allows you to specify a gallery and page on your site to embed within one of your Facebook pages. Select a page and gallery you wish to connect below. After connecting, Squarespace will ask you which of your pages within Facebook you wish to install these pages on.

To begin, you will need to connect your Squarespace 6 website to the Facebook Squarespace App. (Just click the Connect to Facebook button)

After connecting to Facebook, you will need to choose the Facebook Fan Page to link to Squarespace. In my case, Foggy Knitters. Next you will need to choose at least one of the two Squarespace tabs to install on your Facebook Page; a Page and/or a Gallery.

All that’s left now is to choose which pages from your Squarespace website to link to your new Facebook tabs. (Read further for tips on how to make an easy webpage for your Squarespace Page tab. )

Add Hidden Page How to Sync Squarespace 6 Gallery or Page with a Facebook Fan Page Tutorial photoThe easiest way to create a page to link to Facebook is to start by creating a Hidden Page. This way, it will not show up as a Navigation Link, but will still be visible on Facebook. (NB: The page can still be viewed by anyone with the direct link. You can see my linked Facebook page on Squarespace here.)

To make it even more simple, I copied the text and images from my About page and just made it “skinnier” so it would fit properly on the narrow Facebook canvas. All I needed to add was three “Space” blocks placed beside each content block. Essentially narrowing the content to half the original size.

facebook tabs How to Sync Squarespace 6 Gallery or Page with a Facebook Fan Page Tutorial photoMy only complaint about the Facebook Page tabs is the naming of the tabs- Squarespace Page and Squarespace Gallery, not to mention the uncharacteristically ugly light grey-blue icon. Although I’m sure Squarespace users love the platform, I doubt they want Squarespace branding splashed all over THEIR Facebook Fan Page. I’ve put in a feature request hoping for something more generic, like Welcome or Gallery. Even better-  editable tabs.

UPDATE: I just received an email from SS Support. Appears that tab nomenclature might be updated in the future.

Hi Holly,

We’ve marked an improvement request to either offer an option to specifically customize those page titles or at least pull the set title of the page directly from the site.

    Hi Holly,

I’m just starting to build me website with squarespace. Are these features available now on the current version. I’m new to all this and trying to link my facebook to my squarespace site.

    Thanks!

Great stuff, Holly! I was wondering what the Spacer block was good for.

Two updates: The naming of the tabs is no longer a problem. The names can be changed either from SS6 or from FB. Also the images on the tabs can be changed from FB. Hover over the upper-right corner of the “tab” in the main FB and you should see a pencil icon that gets you to those other settings.

Now, while we’re on the subject of Facebook, can you tell me how to get my SS6 site’s FB icon to point to my page rather than to my personal profile? Thanks.

      Hey Sue!
There definitely appears to be an issue with linking to a facebook page right now. Facebook is continually “improving” their service and can cause mayhem on 3rd party integrations. Not sure if that’s the issue here, but it use to work (at least in beta) flawlessly! Here’s a link to the developer’s forum where others are asking about the same thing ( http://developers.squarespace.com/squarespace-6-forum/post/1889218#post1889228 ). Unfortunately, I had to change my foggyknitters site due to my daughter being mortified that I was talking about it on this site ;) so I can’t experiment with it anymore. Strangely enough, It looks like it’s still linked to the FB fan page. (just w/ a website not available frame). I have a couple of ss6 sites “in the works” and just like you, I’m not able to link them to a page. I assume you’ve sent a support request. I know that’s the first thing I’ll be doing after this reply!

      • Sue Mosher says:

I actually had no problem linking my SS6 page to my FB page. I do, however, have some problems with the behavior of the page inside FB — especially the Open in New Window setting not being honored — so I’m going to turn off that feature for now.

        • Holly says:

Ok, I think I see now…( you have a galler page linked- https://www.facebook.com/PlaceKeepers/app_312278178809667 ?) If I understand correctly, you are wanting the fb social account icon to go to your page instead of personal site. Yeah, unfortunately that didn’t work in beta either. I would hope that’s on the top of their priority list.

As an aside, I’m now wondering why I can’t link to a fb page! lol. I have one site I’ve paid for on the standard plan (which doesn’t allow the fb fan page stuff) and another that’s in a trial that I’ll eventually link to my ss5 site. I’m guessing you may already have to be signed up for the Unlimited plan. Honestly, I’m just trying to get the darn blocks to drag and drop where I want them. I’ve spent 20 minutes trying to line up 4 pics on 1 page! So I haven’t really been able to spend much time on the other parts!

        • Holly says:

Sue, just wanted to update and let you know I’ve written a tutorial that has a workaround for linking to your fan page from the social link icons! It should work for most, if not all situations.
